Tips for Managing Anxiety in Your Pet

You and your pet share an irreplaceable bond–but in addition to providing unconditional love, your pet can also experience mental health conditions like anxiety. Anxiety in pets can result from a myriad of triggers, often leading to unusual behavior or undue stress. We care about your pet, and we’ve compiled some of our top strategies for managing anxiety in cats and dogs.

Does your dog or cat have anxiety?

If your dog or cat has anxiety, there are a few signs you’ll probably notice. Dogs can show their distress in the form of constant vocalizations or barking, pacing, depression, drooling, and overly aggressive behaviors. As for cats, the signs can be a bit different: You may see your cat groom themselves excessively, hide from you or other people, and exhibit destructive behaviors around the house.

How can I help my pet manage their anxiety?

Luckily, there are several ways you can help your cat or dog feel less anxious. Start by finding and removing their anxiety triggers if possible. For example, if your dog displays destructive behaviors when they’re home alone, make sure someone is home more often or hire a pet sitter to keep them company. Alternatively, you may try behavioral techniques to reduce their anxiety. If your pet is constantly pacing, they may need an outlet for their energy–try taking your dog for an extra walk or buying your cat a new toy to keep them occupied.

If these techniques don’t work, it’s time to talk to your veterinarian and see what other treatment options are available to you. There are lots of pet-safe medications that have been proven to reduce the symptoms of pet anxiety.
