Even if you aren’t traveling this summer, you probably have a list of things you need to do to make sure you’re ready for the season–and the heat! In addition to AC maintenance, opening your pool for the season, and planning summer barbecues with friends, you need to remember your pet. Here are some important ways you can prep your pet for summer fun:
Prep for Pests
Before summer begins, make an appointment with your veterinarian. Make sure your pet is up to date on all vaccinations, and is taking the right flea and tick prevention medication. You should also find out if your pet needs heartworm prevention. This is especially important if you plan on taking your pet with you on vacation, or leaving him at a kennel or with a pet sitter.
Prep for Trips
If your pet is coming with you on a trip or vacation, make sure he gets a check-up at the veterinarian first. Find out what you need to do to prepare your pet for air or car travel. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations for veterinary care in the city you’re traveling to, in case there’s an emergency that can’t wait until you get back home.
Prep for Sun & Heat
Don’t leave your pet unattended outside, by a pool, or in a car. Pets can suffer from dehydration and heat exhaustion very quickly, even if it doesn’t seem that hot outside to you. Make sure your pet always has access to clean, fresh drinking water. Be aware of the signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion: excessive drooling and panting, vomiting and diarrhea, increased pulse, excessive thirst, weakness and confusion, dry or pale gums, and feeling hot to the touch.
Prep Their Coat
Some pets get too hot in the summer because they have thick undercoats. Ask your veterinarian or groomer if you need to cut or shave your pet’s coat for the summer.
Visit your veterinarian to make sure your pet is ready for summer. Get him up to date on vaccinations, ask for recommendations for a kennel, and get a general health check-up.
